Last night, BuildItGreen had a round table discussion on the new version of GreenPointRated requirements. The major issues have changed from energy efficiency as the new codes have made California houses the most efficient in the nation to environmental issues. It looks like GreenPointRated will look at environmental issues such as carbon emission and water conservation to make the GreenPointRated home a premier product in both energy efficiency and environmental issues. This is what LEED for homes had to do in California. They created a special program for California as changes to the California code had already made the projects we did Gold or Platinum by just meeting the code. So the rest of the country is current Gold or Platinum homes may not even pass minimum California codes.
Three topics of interests to us that came up were how to properly dispose of trash, how to limit carbon emissions, and how to take credit for the more efficient items like heat pump water heaters that cannot be modeled properly by the California Energy Commission compliance software. One of the suggestions for trash disposal was to introduce small pigs to create compost, this was tried in Las Vegas and will be the topic of a future blog as will carbon emissions and how to get credit for the new innovative projects being brought to market.
